Issey MIYAKE
"Donatella VERSACE" ummmmm
I just wanted to read about the great Issey Miyake before getting into theory so I took at quick look at
- Issey Miyake A-POC Instructional Guide
literally was just a scan of instructions and guide for A-POC, can't find it
ISSEY MIYAKE. Irving Penn. Art Documentation: Journal of the Art Libraries Society of North America
Talks about Issey developing garments that "flow around the body adroitly" meaning skillfully or cleverly. Quick excerpt
Loved the input in this one about how the "regulated Japanese tradition of clothing deconstructs socially and physically over-complex dressing" of the West, and the burdensome nature of Western clothing adding unnecessary complexity to people's lives and Issey Miyake's work serving as a relief, a source of play and freedom and expression. He wasn't interested in traditional garment construction "A design must never be painful"
- The Fashion System by Roland Barthes
Very intense intricate breakdown of semiology as it relates to fashion. "Metalanguages are operations they're the majority of scientific languages." Connotative and denotative communication
Analysis of consumer capitalism. Book on branding and identity. "Management theorists in the 80's decide corporations will have to create brands not just products in order to achieve success" - Guardian Article
- Fashion and the Phantasmagoria of Modernity Intro to Decolonial Fashion Discourse - MA Jansen
Reframing fashion locations, how we talk about fashion, quick great read
- Upcycling As A Practice for Decolonizing Fashion: An Interview with Ngozi Okaro
Short quick interview about the value and practices of upcycling
- Decolonizing A Fashion School by Charlotte Bedford
About a specific school in Australia to be honest
- Cutting Through Abundance: Raf Simons and the Artful Slice by Elizabeth Kessler
How Raf cuts his collection is connected to economy (interesting quick read)
How Black kids dress in NO (interviews with them are so cool and cute) and how it's connected to systems of power, subversion, sub-cultural identity cultivation and how these concepts exist with mutuality
This week I talked about Rick Owens Moog on that app and someone asked what it is, it's a collection from FW 2005 from Rick Owens
Here it is on Grailed

Rick Owens MOOG Review on Vogue Runway
Summary: Socially and culturally the tone of this show as dark for the time, and reasonably unique. The paleness of the models is notable, they look like Rick's typical goth moody human columns. They're communicating a subdued and quiet strength which is admirable because it's a confusing form of messaging. These strong assertive and dominating silhouettes, with these muted colors, with these delicate beautiful silk lined skirts mixed with wool and leathers. Very layered communication here. It feels like a dark cult trek with peaceful stops in nature.
Overall Thoughts:
This is going to be a ramble, this entire blog will. I have no intention of creating a curated space to talk about these things. It's 2010, I am Tavi Gevinson, I'm 6 years old, this is my blog and I'm just saying things. I feel a little inhibited by algorithmic incentive to talk about the same things as everyone and satisfy view expectations, so I'm just going to have a place to dump my head and enjoy sharing with whoever it comes across-- very vintage mindset, I know. Anyway, I've found some cool music lately, which I'll share. Also... so into voguing right now.. just kidding, but I'm so into Prince right now. Hopefully bad joke + corny phrase combo softens that blow. I also am so excited, Dunkin Donuts has maple flavored stuff I think? Are they franchises? Small business? Whatever, I won't eat there. I need a new fragrance going into winter and I'm settling on whatever Comme des Garcons fragrance speaks to me, because I'm giving them another try. I'm realizing it's not you, Rei, it's me. Ok I'll put some cool screenshots of instagrams and artists I found here at the bottom I guess? And then a song? I don't know...
this felt very fun can't wait to chat again xx
